Erik Ten Hag, a Dutch professional football manager and former player, made headlines a few days ago when he was appointed manager of Manchester United, an English football club
Five months after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired, Manchester United announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their Men’s First Team Manager from the end of this season until June 2025, subject to work visa requirements, with the option to extend for a further year.
This news left many football club supporters wondering who the new manager is and what is expected of him. In this article, we’ll focus on:
- Erik Ten Hag, who is he?
- Erik Ten Hag: What to Expect
Who is Erik Ten Hag?
Erik Ten Hag was a center-back for Twente, De Graafschap, RKC Waalwijk, and Utrecht. He spent three seasons with Twente, where he won the KNVB Cup in 2000–01.
Ten Hag also won the Eerste Divisie with De Graafschap ten years before winning the cup with Twente. After the end of the 2001–02 Eredivisie season, he retired from active play in 2002, at the age of 32, while playing for Twente.
In 2012, Marc Overmars, the club’s shareholder, appointed Ten Hag as manager of Go Ahead Eagles in the Eerste Divisie. He was the head coach of Bayern Munich II from June 6, 2013 until 2015, when he was replaced by Heiko Vogel. He was named Ajax’s new head coach on December 21, 2017, after the club fired Marcel Keizer.
On May 5, 2019, he won his first managerial trophy with Ajax. Only ten days after winning the cup, Ajax, led by Ten Hag, won the Eredivisie with a 1–4 away victory over De Graafschap, completing the double for the club. Ten Hag became the league’s fastest manager to reach 100 wins with Ajax, accomplishing the feat in 128 games.
“It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United,” ten Hag said.
The task at United could not be more difficult. As United spent more money than at any other point in its history, its performances have only grown worse, leading to a succession of managerial exits and fan unrest against the Glazers.
What to expect from Erik Ten Hag?
Julian Green, who currently plays for Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga, has explained what United fans and players can expect from Ten Hag. He said to MEN Sport: “He has a wonderful personality. He expected the best from each and every player. He is not only a great coach, but also a great person who always tells his players the truth. As a player, you can tell he enjoys the game.” It was always about the finer points. We trained to a standard, not to a timetable, at Bayern. We trained for as long as it took to ensure we understood every detail. Each week, he has a very clear game plan and is an excellent communicator. Win or lose United fans will know there was a plan and a strategy for every portion of the game.”
Erik ten Hag who was never one of those people who made it clear that he aspired to be one of the world’s best coaches. He is a humble coach and a modest man. His situation is unique. Because he comes from a very wealthy family, and his father and brothers are multi-millionaires, there is no financial incentive or need for him to pursue big jobs at any stage of his career. They own a real estate company as well as other financial institutions.
According to a BBC report, Erik’s management is excellent, and all of his players say they have learned a lot from him. Unlike many coaches, Ten Hag will devote a significant amount of time to the training pitch. He’ll go to the 19th or 20th most important player at Manchester United, not just the star players like Cristiano Ronaldo or Harry Maguire. He’s taken on players with various personalities, and he doesn’t care how many hours he has to spend with them; he will devote all of his time to them.
That is where he earns the respect of the players because they see the effort he puts in to help them improve individually. Even if they come from a difficult background – perhaps some baggage – if he believes they have talent, he will make sure they fit in.
He is not afraid to take on the role of Manchester United manager. But he’ll want to spend most of his time in a tracksuit. He doesn’t consider himself an office worker; if he did, he’d work for his father’s company. He’d despite having to talk to agents all the time. That’s where he’ll want a sporting director or an assistant who can do it.
As per a report from thenewyorktimes, Ten Hag will be expected to oversee not only an overhaul of the club’s poorly balanced and expensive roster, but also the club’s culture, where stories of locker room strife have frequently made their way into the public domain.
John Murtough, United’s football director said, “In our discussions with Erik prior to this appointment, we were deeply impressed with his long-term vision for returning Manchester United to the level we want to compete at, as well as his drive and determination to achieve that,”
United’s decline has been so severe that it may be years before ten Hag can be expected to make United a serious contender for the major titles. Rangnick, the current coach, said as much after United’s dreadful performance against Liverpool, during which many United fans left the stadium long before the referee ended the humiliation.
Ten Hag is without a doubt the best candidate for Man United because, in addition to being a professional football player, his managerial career is one to be reckoned with.
Please share your thoughts on Erik Ten Hag’s appointment as Manchester United’s new manager in the comments section below.
We’re taught to play by the rules. But what if those rules are ridiculous? Do we still follow them?
Just like any other field, submitting to rules and guidelines remains constant for “Sports”.
When you start playing a game, the main things you learn are the standards:
- You can’t simply run with the ball, you have to dribble. ● You can’t involve your hands in soccer.
- You can’t handle the quarterback too hard in the NFL.
However, there are a few other weird rules( that you had no idea about) in Sports that we will be discussing in this article.
Weird Rules in Different Sports Basketball:
- No punching of the ball. While kicking the ball is a severe and fair rule in the game, the NBA has presented an odd rule of not punching the ball.
- The 6th man can play except if spotted by the referee. In the NBA, there is a bizarre decision that on the off chance that a group has handled six players, the 6th player can proceed to play and even score, until the ref has spotted it and retouched the mistake, by granting the culpable group a specialized foul.
- While wrongdoers in any game are punished for submitting fouls, the NBA, as well, has a different rule; if a group doesn’t have five physically fit players in a match, because of injury or being shipped off, the following player who submits a foul can remain in the game.
- While breaks are a solid component in any game, there isn’t generally a requirement for the equivalent, particularly when a group is performing great. Be that as it may, the NBA has this strange rule set up for taking compulsory four breaks and saving one for the final quarter.
- The Jump Ball is a component in the game, used to continue to play following a constrained stoppage during mid-match. However, there is a strange rule, which expresses that the Jump Ball should start with the players confronting the crate expected to be taken shots at. Neglecting to do such, the ref requires a foul in no less than 24 seconds, as the play is restarted.
- Players are permitted to serve underarm as it can assist with scoring the point.
- Players aren’t allowed to go over or contact the net with a racquet.
- Players are not permitted to contact the ball till the point is finished.
- A player shouldn’t hit the ball into anything then the net or court before it lands.
- A player is denied purposefully tossing a racket.
- A player shouldn’t whiff the ball while serving.
- A player isn’t allowed to reach over the net to hit the ball assuming the ball skips his/her side of the court.
- A player is permitted to hit the ball across the net. It is illicit to hit through the net.
- A player’s racket shouldn’t cross the plane of the net.
- While swinging, a player is permitted to hit the ball two times, unexpectedly.
- A player is permitted to stand anyplace on or outside the court aside from when he is serving.
- During the game, a player can require around 20 seconds break (inside limits) between focused sets and games.
- It is contrary to the standard to utilize the ball to clear off sweat. Source: triviasharp Volleyball:
- Stepping on or across the helpline while serving or connecting with the ball is a violation.
- Players can’t reach the ball unlawfully (twofold contacting, lifting, conveying, tossing, and so forth.)
- Players are not permitted to contact the net with any piece of the body while the ball is in play.
- Going after a ball coming from the rival’s court and reaching the ball while coming over to the net when the ball has not yet broken the upward plane of the net is not allowed. Source: theartofcoachingvolleyball.com Football:
- On a goal-kick, the ball doesn’t need to leave the 18-yard box to be in play. The ball is in play once the goalie contacts it and it moves position.
- If you throw the ball directly into the goal post, it won’t be considered a goal.
- A soccer match won’t begin if there are no corner banners set up.
- Goalkeepers can only grasp the ball for 6 seconds.
- Truth be told, you can pass the ball to a partner from an extra shot.
- Passing from punishment can be a decent method for surprising the resistance.
- As a punishment, you can’t contact the ball two times. In this way, you can’t take a touch and afterwards shoot the ball into the goal. Punishment should be taken with one touch, the shot.
- You can’t set up your back pass to the goalie.
- While watching soccer, you’ll frequently see players back pass to the goalie with their head or chest. Source: Soccerblade.com Golf:
- If in any event, the player’s ball lies in a hazard, the bug is viewed as in peril and the player may not touch or eliminate the bug from the ball.
- If your ball stops close to a cactus, you might enclose an arm or leg with a towel to shield yourself from the needles when you play your shot. However, you can’t cover the desert flora with a towel.
- Assuming a whirlwind moves your ball, you can play it from its new position. However, assuming that misleadingly pushed air moves your ball, you must replace it without penalty.
- If a player’s shot winds up in the clubhouse, and the clubhouse isn’t too far out, you can open an entryway or window and play the following shot without penalty.
- You can’t put a water bottle on a green and use it as a level to decide how a putt will break.
Other Weird Sports Rules:
- Female wrestlers can’t wear underwire bras. Likewise, all wrestlers should have a cloth convenience.
- In race-walking, you should keep one foot on the ground consistently. But, it’s generally broken. Because who might need to watch feet day in and day out
- You can’t change soccer goalies in a shootout, except if a poor goalie is injured.
- Assuming that a thrown baseball is held up into the umpire’s cover, all sprinters advance one base.
- In acrobatics, your bra and clothing need to either be naked shaded or a similar variety as your leotard.
- In showjumping, horses can’t have cuts on their legs. As per prevalent thinking, this assists the pony with jumping higher.
- Let the treats be the point at which you’re playing water polo. Any contact or snatching of the crotch is the reason for expulsion. Additionally, you can’t sprinkle water on your rival’s face.
- If you take your shirt off during a foot race, you’re excluded.
According to sports rec, Rules provide an agreement of understanding to competition. In sports, rules define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the court. Rules govern anything from wearing proper uniforms to how to keep score during games of different levels of competition.
Regardless of how ridiculous they sound, players, coaches and officials should abide by the regulations.

The majority of the world’s best teams have done their job and secured their place in FIFA’s World Cup, football’s most prestigious tournament (scheduled to take place later this year), with relative ease, but there are a few surprise omissions, as there are at every World Cup. Some teams/countries qualified, while others did not.
Today, we’ll look at how the qualification process works and name eight (8) countries that you’d bet on making the World Cup back when the qualifying campaign started.
According to Wikipedia, qualification was open to all FIFA member associations, of which there are currently 211. Qatar qualified for the tournament automatically as the hosts. The AFC, on the other hand, required Qatar to participate in the Asian qualifying stage because the first two rounds also served as qualification for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Lebanon, the fifth-best second-place team, proceeded instead of Qatar, who reached the final stage as group champions. France, the reigning World Cup champion, went through the same qualifying procedures as everyone else.
Seven teams backed out. Saint Lucia initially qualified for CONCACAF, but later withdrew. North Korea also backed out of the AFC’s second qualifying round due to safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. American Samoa and Samoa also withdrew prior to the OFC qualifier draw, while Tonga withdrew following the 2022 Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai eruption and tsunami. Vanuatu and Cook Islands also withdrew from the OFC qualifiers in Doha due to COVID-19 outbreaks in their squads.
The FIFA Executive Committee met in Zürich on May 30, 2015, following the FIFA Congress, to discuss the allocation of slots to each confederation.
The committee decided to keep the same allocation used in 2006, 2010, and 2014 for the tournaments in 2018 and 2022.
Top Countries That Missed Out of World Cup 2022
In a joint statement with UEFA, FIFA initially banned Russia from international competition. The Russian Football Union filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld the ban for UEFA competitions, which meant Spartak Moscow was forced to withdraw from its Europa League Round of 16 match, paving the way for RB Leipzig to advance to the quarter-finals.
It also means that Russia’s women’s national team will be missing from this summer’s European Championships, which will be held in England. Portugal, the team they defeated in the playoffs to qualify, is expected to take their place.
The CAS issued a decision on March 18 that affected Russia’s participation in the World Cup playoffs.
Dániel Gazdag of the Philadelphia Union scored his second international goal for Hungary in a 4-0 win over San Marino in World Cup qualifying on Friday.
Despite the victory, Hungary was knocked out of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup due to other results. Hungary has one more qualifier against Poland on November 15. Poland has advanced to the second round of the playoffs after finishing first in their group, while England has entered the playoffs and is in position to directly qualify at the top of the group.
Hungary was already a goal up when Gazdag scored in the 22nd minute against San Marino.
Italy will have missed two World Cup finals in a row for the first time in history. North Macedonia sensationally knocked out Roberto Mancini’s team in the play-off stage, but the damage had already been done in the earlier rounds.
Italy finished second in their qualifying group, just two points behind Switzerland. They could have avoided the play-offs if things had gone a little differently. After a winning start, Italy went on to draw four of their ten qualifying matches, which were held by Bulgaria, Northern Ireland, and the Swiss twice. Despite not losing a single match, they finished second in Group C by taking four points out of a possible 12.
Italy is still ranked sixth in the FIFA world Men’s rankings and is the only team out of the top ten seeds that will not be traveling to Qatar.
Sweden initially refused to play and lost its play-off final match against Poland, resulting in its failure to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup after finishing in the quarterfinals in Russia in 2018. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, 40, of AC Milan, has most likely played his final World Cup finals match.
Sweden may not be one of Europe’s heavyweights, but their 17th-place finish in the FIFA World Rankings makes them the second-largest omission from the World Cup, a competition in which they have appeared in five of the last eight years.
Nigeria has failed to qualify for the World Cup for the second time; the first time was in 2006, when the Italian national team, popularly known as the Azzurri, won the tournament in Germany.
Nigeria failed to qualify for a seventh World Cup after a 1: 1 tie with its west African rival Ghana. In the 10th minute, Ghana took the lead through Arsenal’s Thomas Partey. Shortly after, Nigeria equalized when the video assistant referee (VAR) awarded a penalty in the 19th minute after Ademola Lookman was brought down by Dennis Odoi.
Cameroon earned a place on the away goals list with the final kick of the match against Algeria, deep into extra time, as Karl Toko Ekambi swept home a speculative cross to win the match 2-1.
Algeria, who had won the first leg 1-0 in Cameroon, were devastated by the defeat.
Colombia failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third time in a row, after finishing in the quarterfinals and round of 16 in the previous two editions.
Colombian stars like Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez, and Davinson Sanchez are among those whose World Cup memories will fade after the country narrowly missed out on qualification for Qatar by finishing sixth in the CONMEBOL table.
Chile, a surprise omission from South America, will miss their second consecutive World Cup after finishing fifth in qualifying by five points after winning only five of their 18 matches.
La Roja reached the tournament’s last 16 in both the 2014 and 2018 editions, displaying an exciting style of play and plenty of talent in previous squads, but failed to produce anything of the sort in Qatar.
Here’s a quick rundown of the top countries that did not qualify for the World Cup in 2022:

The Premier League Hall of Fame honors association football players who have competed in the Premier League, the highest level of the English football league system. The Hall of Fame, which was supposed to open in 2020 but was delayed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is intended to recognize and honor players who have achieved great success and made significant contributions to the league since its inception in 1992.
The goal is to recognize retired players who have “an exceptional record of on-field success and have made significant contributions to the league.”
The vote will be decided by a combination of nominations from fans and the Premier League Awards Panel. Supporters have the opportunity to vote for six of the 25 available players.
Following the close of voting for the class of 2022, the Premier League has announced the new Hall of Fame inductees on their website.

What Is The Premier League Hall Of Fame?
The Premier League Hall of Fame recognizes and honors former players who have demonstrated exceptional on-field success and have made significant contributions to the League since its inception in 1992. It is the Premier League’s highest individual honor bestowed upon players.
“A place in the Premier League Hall of Fame is reserved for the very best,” said chief executive Richard Masters last April, after announcing the inaugural names of Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry. “It will be an opportunity for our fans all over the world to reflect on the years and join us in celebrating some truly exceptional playing careers.”
What Are the Criteria for Being Inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame?
Several criteria are considered for induction into the Premier League Hall of Fame, primarily players who have an “exceptional record of on-pitch success and have shown significant contribution” since the Premier League’s inception in 1992. Other factors are also considered, with players required to have retired prior to the start of the awarding season and being judged solely on their domestic performances in the Premier League, with no other competitions taken into account. You often hear about Messis and Ronaldos making it big because of their talent and skill with the ball. However, the harsh reality is that talent alone does not guarantee a successful career. To shine on the biggest stages, you must combine your talent with mental toughness.
Unfortunately, an unusually large number of players lacked that trait, and despite their talent, their careers never reached the astronomical heights of superstardom that were once expected of them.
Footballers who fail to live up to their potential are burdened with the question of what if from themselves and others for the rest of their lives.
There are numerous factors that contribute to a player failing to live up to his potential. Injuries can derail a player’s career, a player’s lifestyle can harm his talents, and sometimes a player’s talent is largely based on media hype.
Whatever the case may be, fans are always left disappointed by players who possessed talent but were unable to translate it into greatness. Players, too, are left to ponder what might have been.
Ten Spectacular Talents That Never Made It Big in World Football History.
- RAVEL MORRISON
Ravel Morrison was a Manchester United youth academy product who worked his way up to the senior team. Rio Ferdinand claims that Sir Alex Ferguson once took him, Ryan Giggs, and Wayne Rooney aside during a training session just to show Morrison.
He was undeniably a gifted player who was expected to have an exciting career, but his name is now added to the list of footballers who did not live up to their full potential.
He was sold to Westham United due to some issues stemming from his rough upbringing in Manchester. He went on to play for Cardiff City, Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham City, Lazio, and other clubs. However, he was never the superstar he had the potential to be.
- MARIO GOTZE
Mario Gotze was selected for the German national football team for the first time in 2010 at the age of 18. He was named to the UEFA Euro 2012 squad and scored the game-winning goal in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final two years later. He rose to prominence as a result of his outstanding performances for Borussia Dortmund’s senior team between 2009 and 2013.
The highlight of his career was undoubtedly scoring Germany’s World Cup-winning goal in extra time against Argentina in 2014, when he received Andre Shcurrle’s cross, controlled it with his chest, and shot the ball before it hit the ground.
However, a metabolic disorder that was later diagnosed as myopathy (a muscular disorder that affects muscle fibers) was a huge impediment to his becoming a superstar. Despite having high hopes of regaining his form in his first spell, he was never a regular starter again.
- FREDDY ADU
Freddy Adu was nicknamed “the next Pelé” even before signing with D.C. United at the age of 14. He was expected to take MLS and American football to new heights, but he never lived up to the lofty expectations that were placed on him at such a young age.
However, the excitement surrounding him waned significantly as his performances were unsatisfactory. Many prominent European clubs expressed interest in signing him, but he was unable to obtain a work permit to relocate to Europe before turning 18 and signing with Benfica.
He became a journeyman, playing for fifteen teams in nine countries: the United States, Portugal, Monaco, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Serbia, Finland, and Sweden.
- ARIEL ORTEGA
Ariel Ortega was a highly creative player with excellent technical ability, known for his pace, mobility, dribbling, and dead ball skills, as well as his ball trickery, clever body feints, and lobbed shots. At his peak, he was one of the best dribblers in the world; primarily used as an attacking midfielder.
He was an effective playmaker thanks to his vision and passing ability, which earned him comparisons to Diego Maradona as a young man. Ariel Ortega never lived up to the promise he showed as a youngster emerging from the shadows of Diego Maradona; he never established himself as one of the world’s top two or three players, as he should have given his talent. In fact, his European career was fairly underwhelming, with less than 100 appearances for Valencia, Sampdoria, Parma, and Fenerbahce combined.
- JOE COLE
Joe Cole was well-known for his dribbling abilities, and he was capable of both scoring and creating goals thanks to his vision, passing, and striking ability. During Cole’s time at Chelsea, Pelé praised his dribbling and overall flair, saying, “He has the skills of a Brazilian.” Despite his talent, some critics argue that he failed to live up to the promise he showed in his youth, owing in part to the recurring injuries he suffered throughout his career.
He may have disappointed the average England fan by failing to fully utilize his playmaking abilities.
Cole only played 26 times for Liverpool in three years before being loaned out to Lille and eventually leaving on a free transfer to West Ham United.
- ELVIR BALJIC
Elvir Baljic’s most notable achievement was winning the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid in the 1999–2000 season. After a solid first match, the Bosnian’s radiance faded as he did not appear to be up to the required standard. Baljic’s long-term injury didn’t help matters, and when Vicente del Bosque took over, he was deemed surplus to requirements.
“The new Rivaldo” finished his Turkish league career in 2008, but not before attempting to break into the music industry. He released an album in 2005, but it was also a flop.
During Guti’s career, he almost exclusively played for Real Madrid, appearing in 542 official games and serving as vice-captain, and helping the club win 15 trophies, including three Champions League titles and five La Liga titles. He also played professionally for Beşiktaş in Turkey.
He was expected to become Real Madrid’s manager for the next 15 years and to lead Spain to international prominence. He didn’t reach his full potential because he was out partying, not training, and knowing he was talented but taking it for granted.
- JAVIER SAVIOLA
Javier Saviola played for Barcelona and Real Madrid, as well as Benfica and Olympiacos, and was the youngest player on Pelé’s FIFA 100 list of the 125 greatest living footballers in 2004. During his playing career, Saviola won league titles in Argentina, Spain, Portugal, and Greece, as well as a UEFA Cup.
For seven years, he was an Argentine international, appearing in the 2006 World Cup and the 2004 Copa América, where Argentina reached the final. He also won a gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He was expected to be the best player in the world, but instead he was fantastic at the youth level but did not translate to the pro level.
- BOJAN KRKIC
Bojan Krkic, At the age of 17 years and 19 days, he broke Lionel Messi’s record for the youngest player ever to appear for Blaugrana.
In his first season, he scored ten goals. The potential that Bojan displayed convinced people that he was going to be something special in the world of football, but the fall of one of the most talented players in recent years demonstrated that when expectations are placed on a player, especially a teenager, it can be a dangerous thing. Krkic has never been able to replicate his illustrious debut season.
- ALEXANDER PATO
Alexander Pato’s fall was as quick as his rise in the football world. Pato was a regular at Milan when he was only 21 years old, and he helped them win their first Serie A title in 7 years.
He seemed to have something special within himself that could propel Pato to the top of the world’s rankings.
However, the glimmer of his promising start faded quickly due to injuries and the resulting lack of focus. He returned to Brazil and, once again, was unable to replicate his brilliant performances. As a result, after a few loan moves and a brief stint in Europe with Chelsea and Villareal, he spent two and a half years in the Chinese Super League.
